…1 remanded
Three Brazilian nationals have been charged with overstaying their permitted period in Guyana following a joint operation conducted by the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission at Arakaka Backdam, North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini).
Police said that the operation, carried out on Tuesday, targeted illegal gold mining activities in the area. During the exercise, the joint operation personnel conducted immigration checks and discovered that the three individuals had remained in Guyana beyond the period granted to them.
The trio appeared virtually before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where the charges were read to them.
Alisson DaSilva Ferreira pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined $60,000. In default of payment, he faces four months’ imprisonment. The court also ordered his deportation.
Jonathan Lima Pinheiro also pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000. He was told that failure to pay the fine would result in two months’ imprisonment. A deportation order was also issued against him.
Meanwhile, Dion Marcus Ferreira Rodrigues pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was remanded to prison and is scheduled to return to court on July 14.
