2 found murdered, assault rifle missing at Black Water Backdam

A team of detectives has been dispatched to Black Water Backdam in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) following the discovery of two corpses at a mining operation on Thursday.
The dead men have been identified as 62-year-old Suresh Bachan, and 31-year-old security officer Steven Niles.
Based on reports received, on Wednesday about 18:00h, the two now dead men remained at the worksite after completing a day’s work and stayed in separate camps about 100 meters apart.
However, about 06:00h on Thursday, the General Manager and several of his workers arrived at the worksite and made the gruesome discovery.
Bachan’s body was found lying on a makeshift bed with a mattress on his back while Niles’ body was found in a hammock lying on his back.
Niles was reportedly bludgeoned to the head, while Bachan might have been shot or stabbed. In addition, the AR-15 rifle that was in possession of the security officer is missing. The mats from the sluice box are also missing.
The Police have confirmed that Niles and Bachan were the only two persons at the ‘watch camp’ at the time of their demise.
Back in April 2020, 58-year-old Brazilian gold miner Fredson Da Conceiaco, also known as “Zezong”, and a bandit were killed during a robbery at the Marudi mining area at South Rupununi in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
It was reported that four men armed with guns had attacked the miner’s camp to rob him. During the robbery, the miner, a licensed firearm holder, opened fire, killing one of the gunmen before he was gunned down. The other three bandits had reportedly ransacked the camp before making good their escape.
