2 illegal guns found, 3 arrested in Police operations

Two separate operations conducted by the Guyana Police Force over the weekend have resulted in the discovery of two firearms and led to the arrest of three suspects.
At around 18:30h on Saturday, police ranks from Region Division 4 ‘C’ (East Coast Demerara) were on patrol in the vicinity of Granville Park, Beterverwagting Public Road, ECD, when they discovered a firearm and matching ammunition.
Enquiries revealed that patrol ranks stopped motorcycle CR 439, which was being driven by a 30-year-old man of Sparendaam Squatting Area, ECD. His documents were checked and found to be in force and a search was conducted on his person.
During the interaction, the suspect reportedly stated that he was a security officer attached to a business place at Beterverwagting, and that a firearm was with a colleague at his workplace.

The ranks then escorted him to the location, where a 34-year-old security officer was contacted. The second suspect then went to a fence area in front of the business place and retrieved a 9mm Taurus pistol with 10 live rounds of ammunition in the magazine, which had been hidden between lumber and covered with a tarpaulin.
The two security guards were asked for their precepts and stated that they did not have them in their possession. They were then arrested. No firearm licence for the weapon had been produced as investigations continued.
They were then escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station along with the firearm and ammunition, which were lodged pending investigation. Both suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, at about 20:00h on Saturday, ranks from Regional Division 4 ‘A’ (Georgetown) were on patrol, when they received information regarding an individual with a suspected firearm.

The unlicensed firearm found on the 26-year-old Venezuelan suspect

Acting on the information, they proceeded to Regent and Light Streets, Georgetown, where they contacted a 26-year-old Venezuelan national of Light and Cummings Streets.
Upon seeing the police, the suspect allegedly attempted to remove what appeared to be a firearm from the right side of his pants waist. A .38 revolver containing five spent .38 shells in the chamber, was immediately taken from him.
The suspect was asked if he was the holder of a valid firearm licence and stated that he was not. He was then arrested and escorted to the Alberttown Police Station along with the suspected firearm which was lodged pending investigation.
The suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations.
