Trial in the 2020 elections fraud case continued on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, with the continuation of the cross examination of prosecution witness Bibi Aneishaw Mohamed.
Following the explosive cross examination by defense attorney Nigel Hughes, during her last appearance, this time Mohamed was cross examined by defense attorney Dexter Todd. Much of Todd’s questioning of Mohamed focused on the authentication and verification of the Statement of Polls (SOPs) from the 2020 General and Regional Elections (GRE), which Mohamed had gathered and used to tabulation votes from the GRE.
An elections agent for the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) during the 2020 elections, Mohamed used the SOPs gathered by the PPPC to compare against the numbers released when chaos broke out over the the votes that were allocated during the tabulation of the Region Four votes.
Mohamed sought to explain to the court how she was able to verify that the numbers on the SOPs in her possession were authentic, and directly sourced from staff of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
“There is a process for election, if you read up about the process you would understand why i could verify those are indeed the [authentic SOP] documents based on the sequence of the serial number because every single one is unique number based on what was explained to us by GECOM,” Mohamed explained.
“If I authenticate a piece of paper in front of you then by virtue the information on that said piece of paper which is the subject we are discussing will be able to be verified. I was given an opportunity to compare the two during the recount which validates the elections.”
The witness noted that 2020 was not her first time in a role in monitoring elections. Mohamed was also scheduled to be cross examined by defense attorneys Darren Wade and Eusi Anderson when the court was hit by a power outage that hampered the Attorneys.
Mohamed has been a key witness in the case where nine persons are charged with conspiracy to commit electoral fraud in relation to the tabulation of votes for Region Four in the 2020 GRE.
Those charged include former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowefield, former Deputy CEO Roxanne Myers, former Region Four Returning Officer, Clairmont Mingo, former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Minister Volda Lawrence, former APNU+AFC Chief Scrutineer, Carol SMith-Joseph, and former Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) employees Enrique Livan, Sheffern February, Michelle Miller, and Denise Bobb-Cummings.
Mohamed’s testimony has been fraught with tension over the past few months, including a heated exchange with the defense and accusations of threats against her from one of the co-defendants.
Trial in the case continues today.
