3 die in Berbice crash

Three young men lost their lives on Tuesday afternoon in a horrific road accident along the Madia Farm Public Road, Corentyne, leaving families and communities mourning yet another tragedy on the nation’s roads.
Dead are 19-year-old Ameer Khan of John Village, Corentyne; 23-year-old Priyas Mursalin of Chesney Front; and 16-year-old Porshatam Hoolasia of Haswell, Port Mourant and a student of JC Chandisingh Secondary.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at about 15:30h.
The trio was travelling in motorcar PLL 4312 when the vehicle became involved in collision with a Toyota Harrier.
According to information gathered, the men were travelling east along the Madia Farm Public Road when the collision occurred. Reports indicate that the driver of the car attempted to pass another vehicle before colliding head-on with an oncoming Toyota Harrier that was proceeding in the opposite direction.
The force of the impact sent the car into a nearby Guyana Power and Light utility pole, causing further damage.
Residents and motorists rushed to the scene as emergency responders worked to remove the injured from the wreckage.
Khan and Mursalin were pulled from the wreckage while Hoolasia is said to have been pinned inside. The two were taken to the Port Mourant where they passed away while receiving medical attention.
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at the same medical facility.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota Harrier, a 44-year-old of Miss Phoebe, Corentyne, sustained injuries and was treated at the hospital and sent away.
He was subsequently taken into custody and is assisting Police with the investigation.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
