3 years in jail for man who chopped vagrant

Devon Jackson was on Friday jailed for three years after being arraigned before Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly for maliciously inflicting chop wounds on Michael Mohammed, a vagrant, on June 26, 2017 at Charlotte Street,

Devon Jackson

Georgetown.

The prosecution’s case was that the incident occurred at about 19:00h on the day in question, when the virtual complainant was lying on a cardboard in the vicinity of a popular business spot on Charlotte Street, and the defendant approached him with a cutlass and ordered that he get up.

The VC told the defendant that he had a cut and could not move, and this prompted the defendant to kick the VC several times about his body. Jackson then reportedly dealt the VC several lashes with a cutlass which was in his hand, and as the vagrant began to yell for help, Jackson chopped him to his hand and head.

Onlookers rushed the injured vagrant to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where he was treated; and a report of the matter was made to the police, thus the defendant was arrested and charged.

In court on Friday, the defendant declared: “Is not no chop. Is a guard pushing this story, and he is lying.”

Magistrate Daly, nevertheless, jailed the defendant for three years.
