A 44-year-old mechanic was on Tuesday charged with causing the death of 52-year-old pedestrian Matthew Vanveen, who died following an accident along the Providence Public Road last Saturday.
Maurice Menezes, from Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court, where a charge of causing death by dangerous driving was read to him.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge after the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied. He was granted $300,000 bail and will make his next court appearance on May 20, 2026.
He was accused of driving motor pick-up GAB 5505 in a dangerous manner, thus causing the death of Vanveen from the Castello Housing Scheme, East La Penitence, Georgetown.

It was reported that the pedestrian was crossing the roadway with a five-gallon container of fuel, and as he attempted to step off the concrete median, he reportedly lost his footing and stumbled backward into the path of the oncoming vehicle, thus resulting in a collision.
He was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died the following day while receiving medical treatment.
