3rd leg of DVA school tournament a resounding success

The final preliminary round of the ongoing Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) school tournament culminated in the bauxite famous Linden. The Mining Town saw teams bringing their very best to battle for a place in the upcoming finals.

There were three female teams; Linden Female Team- St Cuthbert’s Females and Georgetown Mixed Team. The B Division male teams were Castrol, Timehri High Fliers, Linden and St Cuthbert’s Males, while the likes of GDF and Young Achievers comprised the A Division Males.
In the female category, the Georgetown Mixed team defeated both the Linden and St Cuthbert’s Females to clinch the final 25-20 with the young St Cuthbert’s Females bringing second place. In the B Division final, the inexperienced St Cuthbert’s lads took control of the game and won against the Linden team, comprising of many notable ex-national players, 25-19.
In the A Division category, the Young Achievers once again proved why they’re the best in the country by defeating the GDF team 25-20.
Notable performances included a splendid blocking performance from George Michael Adolph and a powerful attacker in Juan Reynier Velasquez Calzado, both of GDF; while on the Young Achievers team both Geno Carroll and Ryon Mangrau were instrumental in obtaining their team’s victory.
DVA President, Trevor Williams, expressed a sense of pride after bringing competitive volleyball back to Linden after over 15 years and listed this leg as quite the accomplishment for the new DVA Executive. Williams also noted that outreaches are a part of the DVA’s developmental agenda and the association is looking forward to nurturing new clubs, while placing a strong emphasis on youth and the building of a volleyball culture in Linden.
