4 more die from COVID, 206 new cases recorded in 24h

The Health Ministry on Thursday reported that four more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died, thus taking June’s death toll so far to 60 and the overall toll to 458.
The latest fatalities are two women – an 85-year-old from Region One (Barima-Waini) and an 81-year-old from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) – both of whom died on Tuesday. The other two are a 58-year-old man from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and a 54-year-old woman of Region Four, who died on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, a 68-year-old female from Region Four and a 55-year-old male from Region Six died while receiving care at medical facilities.
New statistics provided by the Ministry show that overall, cases have now risen to 19,565 – 9561 males and 10,004 females. This is after a whopping 206 new cases were recorded during a 24-hour period.
The stats also showed 18 persons remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 112 in institutional isolation, 1572 in home isolation and nine in institutional quarantine. The country has seen 17,405 recoveries.
Since the pandemic started, 182,066 persons were swabbed for the coronavirus.
Of the new cases, three were recorded in Region One; six in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); 16 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 46 in Region Four; two in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); 21 in Region Six; a staggering 101 in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and 11 in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Cases in Regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) did not increase, remaining at 1243 and 379 respectively.
The Ministry has reminded citizens that symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, cough, tiredness, diarrhoea, pains, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell.
The more serious symptoms are difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain and loss of speech or movement. If persons are experiencing symptoms or have been in contact with a positive person, they are asked to contact the COVID-19 Hotline on 231-1166, 226-7480 or 624-6674 immediately or visit www.health.gov.gy.
All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures which emphasise: the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; the importance of maintaining six feet of physical distance from others; and the need for good hand-washing hygiene. The 22:30h (10:30 pm) to 04:00h (4 am) national curfew is in effect until June 30, 2021.
Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported some 179,241,734 confirmed cases along with 3,889,723 deaths. For the Region of the Americas, confirmed COVID-19 cases have increased to 71,232,746 with a death toll of 1,873,241.
