4 remanded for murder of WCB taxi driver

Four persons were on Friday remanded for the murder of 47-year-old Mohamed Haniff, a taxi driver of Experiment, West Coast Berbice (WCB), Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).

Dead: Mohamed Haniff

They all appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.
The four: Sarju Matadin, 56, a cash crop farmer of Bath Settlement; Royston Dowden, 29, a labourer also of Bath Settlement; Devon McCalmont, 50, a D&I worker of Number 22 Bel Air and his brother-in-law Ivan Lindu, 21, of Waterloo, Bath, appeared before Magistrate Robindranauth Singh.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Philip Sheriff told the court that the prosecution is awaiting the post-mortem results in order to complete the case file.
Meanwhile, Attorney-at-Law Benard DaSilva representing Matadin told the court that his client was detained for more than 72 hours without being informed whether the police had secured an order from the High Court for him to be further detained.
DaSilva claimed that Matadin was beaten about his body by Police at both New Amsterdam and Eve Leary where he was detained.
He entered an application seeking to have Matadin examined by a medical doctor.
Magistrate Singh ordered that the defendant be medically examined. They were all remanded to prison and the case will continue on October 2.
Reports are that on September 11, the men stormed Haniff’s house in an attempted robbery and in the process, chopped the man about his body and made good their escape empty-handed.
Haniff was later picked up by a neighbour and rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital. As a result of the extent of his injures he was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition and subsequently died at about 01:30h on September 12.
The man’s wife, who was initially detained, was released on station bail, but has to report to the Fort Wellington Police Station on a daily basis. (G4)
