Veteran lifter Frank Tucker will launch Guyana’s medal challenge at the International Powerlifting Federation World Masters Championships on Thursday, leading a five-member national team into competition in Reno, Nevada, USA.
The championships, scheduled for October 15–24, provide another opportunity for Guyana to build on its recent success at the South American Powerlifting Championships in Santiago, Chile. The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation’s 17-member team returned from that competition with 21 medals, comprising six gold, 10 silver and five bronze.

Tucker, 74, will make his World Masters debut in the Masters Four 93kg category, where he faces two American lifters on Thursday. He is scheduled to compete in both the Classic and Equipped sections of the championships.
The veteran said his training had gone well and expressed confidence ahead of his first appearance at this level.
Joining Tucker on the Guyana team are Naranjan Singh, Gordon Edwin Spencer, Roger Rogers and Tremel Clarke, with the country represented across all four Masters age divisions.
USA-based Singh, who celebrates his 83rd birthday on October 20, will compete in the Masters Four 83 kg division next week. This will be his third World Championships appearance, and he is confident of adding to his record of winning medals for Guyana.
Spencer will contest the Masters Three 93kg Equipped category against five other lifters from the USA, Finland and Estonia.
Meanwhile, Federation General Secretary Rogers faces seven opponents in the Masters Two 120 kg division. His competitors represent the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and France.
Clarke, who recently entered the Masters ranks at age 40, will compete in the Masters One 105 kg class. Following a promising performance at the FESUPO competition in Chile, he will seek to carry that form onto the world stage.
His opposition will include lifters from the USA, Chile, Great Britain, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand and Canada.
The championships are expected to bring together 507 male and female lifters from 39 countries, with Guyana’s five representatives seeking to extend the country’s recent international medal success.
