44 athletes set for South American Games

…Vickery to make debut for Guyana

The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has unveiled a 44-member contingent that will represent Guyana at the upcoming XIII South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina, from September 12 to 26.
Guyana will be represented in the disciplines of Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Esports, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, and Tennis at the games, which will be staged across the three host cities of Rosario, Santa Fe and Rafaela.
The continental event is set to bring together more than 4000 athletes from 15 countries. Further, the programme will feature 43 sports, 60 disciplines, and approximately 465 medal events.
A highlight of this year’s games for Guyana will be professional tennis player Sachia Vickery, who is set to make her debut representing Guyana at the Games, marking an important addition to the national team.
According to a missive from the GOA, the 2026 South American Games are especially significant because several competitions will provide qualification opportunities for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Guyana’s participation is therefore an important part of the country’s preparation and qualification pathway towards Lima 2027 and, ultimately, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Games come during an exceptionally demanding multi-sport year for the GOA and Guyanese sport. Throughout 2026, the Association has been required to coordinate and support delegations participating in the South American Youth Games, Commonwealth Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, Junior Olympic Games and other regional and international competitions.
Collectively, these undertakings have involved supporting more than 400 athletes and officials across over 12 sporting disciplines, reflecting the GOA’s continued commitment to expanding international opportunities for Guyanese athletes.
GOA President Godfrey Munroe, in a statement, said the size and diversity of the delegation demonstrate the continued development of Guyana’s high-performance sporting system.
“The participation of athletes across eight disciplines reflects the growing breadth of Guyanese sport and the determination of our national federations and athletes to compete successfully at the highest regional level,” Munroe shared.
He added, “These Games are not only about immediate results; they are an important part of our wider athlete-development and qualification pathway towards the 2027 Pan American Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. “The Guyana Olympic Association remains committed to working with our national federations, athletes, coaches, government and other partners to provide the support necessary for our athletes to compete with pride and distinction.”
In addition, GOA Vice President and General Secretary Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon will attend the Games, representing the GOA at key ODESUR meetings and official engagements.
The GOA has extended its best wishes to the entire delegation and encouraged all Guyanese to support the athletes as they compete with pride and determination in Argentina.
