48th Republic Day messages

As Guyana celebrates its 48th Republic Anniversary under the theme “Let’s Cooperate and Celebrate Republic 48”, wishes for prosperity were extended to the country and its people.

PPP urges reflection on journey to becoming republic
In expressing its best wishes to those here and in the Diaspora, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) said that jubilant celebrations through vibrant music and a multitude of colours reflect not just revelling after hard work as the name of our national holiday, Mashramani, connotes, but our rich diversity that define us as a nation.
“Our nation’s journey to becoming a republic was fraught with many challenges. However, its attainment is testimony to the patriotism, fortitude and resilience of all of our people who remained steadfast to their commitment to nationhood.”
The Party fervently hopes that all will take the opportunity to reflect on Guyana’s journey as a nation and be imbued with a profound sense of pride as the occasion of Mashramani 2018 is being observed and celebrated.

PNCR urges Guyanese to redouble efforts to foster trust, cooperation
On the other hand, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) also extended good wishes to citizens, saying that the occasion was one for reflection and assessment of the state of the nation 48 years after being declared a republic.
“… It must be evident to all that we, as Guyanese, need to redouble our efforts to achieve greater trust and cooperation between our communities. We want happy families and households. We want better inter-personal relations. We must strengthen national unity, expand national infrastructure, fortify national institutions, ensure national security and extend public services.”

GAWU wants Guyanese to work to find solution to current socioeconomic challenges
Also joining in extending Republic anniversary wishes is the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), who is also soberly cognisant of current affairs such as the economic struggle for a reasonable standard of living, disunity, crime, carnage on the roads, home invasions, corruption and unemployment.
“We urge our leaders, at this time, to recognise their deficit in our society and to consider in a matured, responsible way how to forge unity, which is generally recognised as desirable.”
The Union went on to highlight the plight of the thousands who have joined the breadline from the sugar industry.
“This is a blemish on our national leadership and is an act that surely will not ease social tensions nor aid, in any way, our economic growth.” Nevertheless, GAWU calls on Guyanese not to abandon hope and unite and struggle for genuine change.

IAC calls for reflection, inclusion and unity as Guyana moves ahead
The Indian Action Committee (IAC) also joined the call for “inclusion, genuine and lasting national unity in the drive towards economic development and prosperity”.

President Trump congratulates Guyana
Meanwhile, United States President Donald Trump congratulated both the country and its people, saying that the North American nation took pride in its partnership with its South American neighbour.
“We value your ongoing contributions to regional security and look forward to working with you on the development of your natural resources for the benefit of the Guyanese people.”
