5,000 new students to join UG as new academic year begins

The University of Guyana (UG) is set to welcome approximately 5,000 new students as orientation activities begin Monday, marking the start of the 2026/27 academic year. Orientation for new students will run from August 31 to September 4 at the Turkeyen and Berbice campuses, as well as the University’s Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) regional locations. Orientation for continuing students is scheduled for September 9 to 11. The University currently has more than 10,000 continuing students enrolled across a range of academic disciplines, while registration for the new academic year remains ongoing. According to UG, the orientation programme is designed to help new students become familiar with the University’s academic and administrative systems, policies, facilities and support services. Registry orientation sessions will begin at 9:00 am daily and will be delivered in a blended format. Students can attend in person at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre at the Turkeyen Campus or participate virtually after registering online. The Registry sessions will be followed by faculty-specific orientation activities, with students receiving registration and access information from their respective faculties and through official University communication channels.

Students enrolled in online and blended programmes will also receive guidance on navigating the University’s digital learning environment. UG said the programme will provide students with information and practical support as they begin their university studies. The University’s official Ceremonial Opening for the new academic year will take place on Friday, September 4, at the Ameena & Sattaur Gafoor Multipurpose Auditorium at the Turkeyen Campus. Activities will begin at 10:00h with an open campus experience, allowing students to meet faculty, staff and peers, explore the campus, and learn about student clubs and societies. The formal ceremonial opening will begin at 14:00h.
