55-year-old man freed of 2018 rape charge

A 12-member jury on Friday delivered a unanimous not guilty verdict against 55-year-old rape accused Sean Bacchus, who was on trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow in the Sexual Offences Court at the Demerara High Court.

Bacchus, who pleaded not guilty to the indictable charge, was found not guilty after deliberations by the jury. The indictment had read that on a July 27, 2018, on the East Bank of Demerara he engaged in sexual activity with a six-year-old girl.
According to reports, the child was left in the care of the accused. The incident was reported by the child’s mother to the Police.
State prosecutors Teriq Mohammed and Mandel Moore presented the state’s case while attorney-at-law Clyde Forde represented the now free man.
