6 drivers slapped with traffic offence charges

…2 fined $200,000 each, 4 on $950,000 bail

Six motorists have been charged in separate traffic-related matters on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), with offences ranging from dangerous and careless driving to driving with a breath alcohol level above the prescribed legal limit.
Among those charged is 35-year-old Nigel Browne, an operator of Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast, who was charged with dangerous driving in relation to an incident that allegedly occurred on July 15 at Land of Plenty Public Road.
Browne appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on July 16, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $600,000 bail.
As part of his bail conditions, Browne is required to report to the Anna Regina Police Station every Friday of each month and surrender his travel documents pending the outcome of the matter. The case was adjourned to August 12.
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Heston Boyce, a jetman of the Charity Housing Scheme, was charged with careless driving following an incident on June 5 at Charity Public Road involving 65-year-old Rural Constable Aron Reid of the Guyana Police Force.
Boyce appeared before Magistrate Mohabir at the Charity Magistrate’s Court on July 13. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $50,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to November 30, 2026, for trial.
In separate matters, four men were charged with driving while their breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed legal limit under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, as amended.
Thirty-five-year-old taxi driver Troy Paul of Henrietta pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on July 14 in relation to an offence committed on July 7 at Anna Regina Public Road. He was fined $200,000 or, in default, will serve six months’ imprisonment.
Construction worker Ramkarran Jaigobin, 36, of Capoey Compound, appeared before the same court on July 15 in connection with an alleged offence committed on June 24 at Columbia Public Road. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $100,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to September 1.
Forty-three-year-old fisherman Jimmy Jim Ferguson of Richmond Lima Sand pleaded guilty at the Charity Magistrate’s Court on July 13 to an offence allegedly committed on July 4 at Lima Sand Access Road. He was fined $200,000 or, in default, will serve six months’ imprisonment.
Also charged was 46-year-old labourer Mitra Mohabir of Coffee Grove, who appeared before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on June 30 in relation to an alleged offence committed on June 27 at Reliance Public Road.
Mohabir pleaded not guilty and was granted $200,000 bail. He was ordered to report to the Anna Regina Police Station every Friday pending the trial. The matter was adjourned to July 21.
