Guyana and Suriname have agreed to introduce an integrated online booking system for the Canawaima Ferry Service as part of efforts to improve efficiency and modernise operations along the maritime route linking the two countries.
The decision was among the key outcomes of a joint bilateral meeting of the boards of the Canawaima Ferry Service of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname, held on Wednesday in Nickerie, Suriname. According to a statement from the Public Works Ministry, the proposed online booking system is expected to improve customer convenience by reducing waiting times and allowing passengers to make advance reservations for both themselves and their vehicles. The platform will also provide 24-hour ticket purchasing, automated booking confirmations, and real-time capacity management to enhance operational planning.

The Boards also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a reliable daily ferry schedule and agreed to work collaboratively towards the successful implementation of the digital booking platform. In addition to service improvements, the meeting addressed the planned drydocking of the MV Canawaima and the overhaul of its main engines to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the vessel. Proposals for technical cooperation to support the maintenance programme will be considered through the appropriate channels.
To minimise disruptions during the maintenance period, both sides agreed that a replacement vessel will be deployed to ensure ferry operations continue without interruption. The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, improving operational performance, reinforcing institutional resilience and enhancing the overall quality of the ferry service. The Ministry noted that the meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Guyana and Suriname to the continued development of the Canawaima Ferry Service, which remains the principal maritime link between the neighbouring countries.
The ferry service plays an important role in facilitating the movement of passengers, vehicles and cargo while supporting trade, tourism and regional integration between Guyana and Suriname.
Both boards reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in delivering a safe, reliable and efficient ferry service for the benefit of the people of both countries.
