6 ECD residents charged for narco-trafficking

A total of six persons were charged on Friday for trafficking in narcotics after they were nabbed with a quantity of cannabis on separate occasions.
Appearing before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court was 23-year-old Gerald Kissoon, along with 23-year-old Avinash Mahabal and 64-year-old Parasram Mahabal.
The trio of Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was charged contrary to Section 5 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Control Act, Chapter 10:10.
The allegations stated that the defendants had in their possession, 885 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking but they all denied that charge and were remanded to prison. The matter will continue on June 9.
Also appearing in court was 27-year-old Neil Krishna of Mon Repos, ECD. It is alleged that Krishna had in his possession 10.63 grams of cocaine and 31.71 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He too pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until June 9, 2021.
In addition, 30-year-old Teernauth Baskaram also known as “Gopal” pleaded guilty to the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and was fined $5000 and ordered to perform a month of community service at the Mahaica Police Station.
Moreover, 37-year-old Devon Premchand of Mahaicony, ECD, also pleaded guilty to trafficking in narcotics.
Premchand was also ordered to perform six months’ community service at the Mahaica Police Station as well as pay a $20,000 fine.
