$60,000 open race prize headlines MoM anniversary cycling meet

A first prize of $60,000 will be up for grabs in the open race when Men on Mission (MoM) stages its fourth-anniversary cycling celebration on Sunday, October 18, around the Main Street circuit in Georgetown.

Organisers will put up more than $800,000 in prizes for the event, which will bring together cyclists across several age groups and competitive categories. Registration begins at 07:00h, with racing scheduled to start at 07:15h at Main and New Market Streets.
The 40-minute open race carries the largest individual winner’s prize on the published programme. Along with the $60,000 top award, the second-place finisher will receive $50,000, followed by $40,000 for third, $25,000 for fourth and $20,000 for fifth.
In the elite category, the first four finishers will collect $40,000, $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000, respectively. The junior prizes are $35,000 for first, $20,000 for second and $10,000 for third.
The Masters 35-and-over category offers $35,000 to the winner, with $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 available for the next three places. Masters 50-and-over riders will compete for prizes of $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000.
Category Four riders will receive $30,000, $25,000, $20,000 and $10,000 for the first four positions, while the women’s category offers $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000. A further $50,000 is listed for BMX, although the allocation by finishing position is not specified.
Five races are scheduled. The opening event is listed for the CIC, Ministers, and Heads of Government and Private Sector organisations over one to two laps, adding a friendly contest for bragging rights to the programme.
Category Four, Masters 50-and-over and female riders will feature in the second race, scheduled for 20 minutes. Elite cyclists, Masters 35-and-over riders and juniors will then contest another 20-minute race.
The fourth event will feature children’s BMX and an invitational race over one to four laps, before the open race closes the programme. Novices are also included among the categories advertised on the main event flyer.
From the starting point, riders will travel south along Main Street’s western carriageway towards the Bank of Guyana. They will then turn left onto the eastern carriageway and continue to Lamaha Street before turning left at the Ministry of Finance and returning to the start/finish line.
The cycling meet forms part of MoM’s fourth-anniversary celebrations under the One Guyana initiative.
