8 drivers fined after admitting to DUI charge

As ranks of the Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department continue with traffic enforcement efforts, they have arrested and charged eight more drunk drivers under the Force’s “name and shame” campaign.
Omparkesh Rajpat, of Adventure, Essequibo Coast, was stopped and tested with a breathalyser on March 15, 2016, while driving motor vehicle PSS 4095 on the Henrietta Public Road, Essequibo Coast. He was found to be above the legal limit in terms of alcohol consumption and was subsequently charged. On August 5, 2016, Anthony Johnson, of Lot 118 Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was also stopped and tested while driving motor vehicle PTT 3706 on the Vlissengen Road, Kitty. He too was charged and placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts days after he was found to be above the legal limit. Johnson pleaded guilty to the driving under the influence (DUI) charge and a $7500 fine was imposed.
Rameshwar Singh, of Lot 206 Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast, was found to be above the legal limit after he was stopped and tested with a breathalyser on March 15, 2016, while driving motor vehicle PGG 7126 on the Henrietta Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Singh was subsequently charged and appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court the next day when he pleaded guilty and was fined $30, 000.
Next, Rolston Griffith, of Lot 868 Onderneeming, East Bank Essequibo, was driving motor vehicle PMM 4148 on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, when the Police stopped and tested him with a breathalyser on August 6. Griffith was found to be above the legal limit in terms of the consumption of alcohol, so he was charged and six days later, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he was fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to the DUI offence. Additionally, his driver’s licence was endorsed with the offence.
Omesh Ramadar, of Lot 135 Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, was stopped and tested with a breathalyser on March 13, while driving motor vehicle PLL 8576 on the Cotton Field Public Road, Essequibo Coast. He was found to be above the legal limit in terms of consumption of alcohol; as such, he was charged and the next day, appeared at the Charity Magistrate’s Court, where he was fined $30,000 after pleading guilty. On May 26, while driving motor vehicle PRR 1435 on the Hampton Court Public Road, Essequibo Coast, Kelvin Prince, of Lot 61 Charity, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was stopped and tested with a breathalyser. He was found to be above the legal limit of alcohol consumption and was charged. Prince appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty and was fined $20,000.
In addition, Latchman Chutkhan, of Lot 48 Bloomfield Village, Corentyne, was stopped and tested with a breathalyser on May 10, while driving motor vehicle PFF 5636 on the Tain  Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. He was charged after the Police found that he was above the legal limit in terms of consumption of alcohol, and subsequently appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge after which a $7500 fine was imposed.
Finally, Jason Persaud, of Lot 732 Charity, Essequibo Coast, was stopped and tested with a breathalyser on June 26, while driving motor vehicle PSS 658 on the Perth Public Road, Essequibo Coast. He too was found to be above the legal limit and was charged. Persaud appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court the next day, and pleaded guilty to the offence. He was fined $30,000, with an alternative sentence of two weeks’ imprisonment.
