The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arm of the Guyana Fire Service has successfully delivered nine babies so far in 2026, including seven girls and two boys, as its Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) continue to provide pre-hospital care across the country.

According to the Guyana Fire Service in a social media post on Wednesday, seven of the deliveries were recorded in A Division, while two occurred in C Division.
In each case, the babies were delivered by trained EMS personnel while the mothers were being transported by ambulance to hospital.
The deliveries demonstrate the role of EMS personnel in responding to medical emergencies that occur before patients reach a healthcare facility. While ambulance transportation remains a key part of their duties, EMTs are also trained to provide immediate medical intervention when circumstances require it.
Emergency childbirth can progress rapidly, requiring EMS personnel to remain calm, assess the situation and apply their training to protect both mother and child while continuing preparations for transfer to a medical facility.
The Fire Service in its post commended its EMTs for their professionalism, preparedness and commitment to providing emergency medical care to members of the public.
The Service also said it remains committed to strengthening its EMS capacity through continued training and development, ensuring that its technicians are equipped to respond to a range of medical emergencies.
The nine deliveries recorded so far this year, the fire service said, underscore the expanding role of the Guyana Fire Service’s EMS arm, with personnel providing critical care in situations that extend well beyond firefighting.
