Based on reports received, the man was last seen on Monday at about 16:00h and his body was found on Tuesday at about 11:00h. He reportedly lived alone.
After the discovery, the man’s niece told detectives that she would visit her uncle on a regular basis to cook, wash, and clean for him. She reportedly went to the house on Monday with the intention of running some errands for him on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, she explained that she went to the Cove and John Post Office to transact business for her uncle, and about 11:00h she went to his home.
As she arrived, she observed his slippers at the top of his step but as she entered his home, she saw bloodstains on the floor in the sitting room area.
She thought something was amiss and called out to him but there was no answer so she went into the kitchen and it was there she discovered his lifeless body. He was under the kitchen sink, covered in blood. The young woman immediately raised an alarm and the police were summoned to the scene.
Investigators observed two open wounds to the back of the pensioner’s head, one to the right side of his face, swelling to the left side of his face, and wounds on his right hand and wrist.
A piece of wood, suspected to be the murder weapon was also recovered along with a bloodstained piece of cloth on the floor.
The interior of the house did not appear to have been ransacked, and there were no signs of forced entry.
The body was escorted to the Lyken Funeral Home as investigations continue. Up to press time, no arrests were made.
Investigations are ongoing.
