Rosignol fisherman stabbed to heart – autopsy

…as suspect surfaces fully armed

An autopsy performed on the body of 48-year-old Feroze Khan also called “Eggy” of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, gave the cause of death as perforation of the heart due to a stab wound, compounded by blunt trauma to the head. The autopsy was conducted on Friday by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh. Khan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital on Thursday. Police in a statement had stated that the suspect was at a grocery shop located at Bennet Dam, where he purchased a bottle of water.  He left the shop, picked up a piece of wood, and ran towards Khan, who was walking on the said street and dealt him several lashes about his body. Police have since said that the victim fell to the ground when the suspect pulled out a knife from his pants waist and dealt the victim a stab and subsequently fled the scene. According to Khan’s wife, 41-year-old Sally Ishaak, there was a religious function next door to their Stelling Road home which she attended on Thursday.

During that period, she said her husband was disturbing the proceedings and she advised him to go to his mother’s home. She said Khan left and was seen entering a minibus and was again seen exiting the bus in the busy shopping area. The mother of three related that it was only moments after speaking to her husband that she received reports of his demise and discarded it as a rumour until three men went to her a short while after, confirming that her husband was stabbed. She said when she arrived on the scene, Khan appeared to have been dead already.
She said eyewitnesses told her that the suspect, after stabbing the victim, took the money he had in his pockets and fled. According to Ishaak, her husband had left home with $70,000.
He was expected to go back to sea on Friday.
The unemployed Ishaak, now widow, explained that Khan had been taking care of all of the financial needs of the family.
Khan was the eldest of four siblings. His mother, Drupattie Persaud, told this publication that she wants justice. She referred to her son as someone who never got into fights but frequently would use obscene language, especially when he was under the influence of alcohol.
Khan is said to have been consuming alcohol earlier on Thursday.
Meanwhile, residents of Bennet Dam said the suspect was seen on the street on Thursday evening but was armed with a cutlass and knife. Contact was made with the Police but by the time they arrived, he had disappeared. Police continue their manhunt for him. (G4)
