West Indies Championships: Spinners keep GHE in contention as batting wobbles again
The Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) spin bowling department kept them in the game against the West Indies Academy at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, Antigua on Thursday, but a spirited performance from their countryman on the opposing team, Ashmead Nedd spurred another shaky start to the Harpy Eagles batting.
Following Kevin Sinclair’s four-wicket haul the afternoon prior, on Thursday morning, Gudakesh Motie and Veerasammy Permaul combined to claim the remaining six wickets in the opening session.
Motie had 3-31 from 10 overs, while Permaul picked up 3-15 from 9 to restrict the Academy to 162 and maintain a 13-run lead for the Harpy Eagles.
Rashawn Worrell top-scored for the Academy team with 58 off 146 balls, while Joshua Bishop also slammed a half- century. Mnemonic Joseph and Nedd were the only other players to reach double figures, with 11 and 10 respectively.
Sinclair ended the innings with 4-45 from 16 overs.
By tea on Thursday afternoon, the Harpy Eagles were well into their second innings on 84-2, with a lead of 93 runs.
Kevlon Anderson was unbeaten on 24 from 70 balls, while Tevin Imlach had 18 from 63 deliveries. For the Academy, Nedd picked up both wickets, claiming 2-9 from 12 overs.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Nandu perished for 22 runs and 19 runs respectively.
However, Nedd would continue his spectacular spell, removing Anderson and Perez in the final session. Anderson fell one short of his half-century, with 49 from 130 balls, while Perez only added 8 off 42 to the GHE total. Imlach fell for 29 off 84 balls, leaving the Harpy Eagles five down by close of play.
Today, Kemol Savory and Sinclair will continue their budding partnership. Savory is unbeaten on 20 from 31 balls, while Sinclair has 16 off 15 deliveries.
Nedd claimed figures of 4-27 from 26 overs, inclusive of a whopping 13 maiden overs. Joshua James picked up the only other wicket for 38 off 9 overs. The Harpy Eagles will resume the day on 165-5.
