George’s ton puts UG in charge after day 1 proceedings

– TSC gain command over GDF

Devon George scored his maiden first division century to help the University of Guyana (UG) set a competitive first innings’ total of 272 on the first day of their two-day clash against Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO).
The right-handed George accounted for eight fours and five sixes in his even 100, the team’s top score after winning the toss and deciding to take first strike.
He shared in two significant partnerships during his knock: first adding 69 for the second wicket with Melroy Stephenson (38), then 64 for the fourth wicket with Omesh Danram (40).

Ray Newton (26), Suresh Danhai (22) and Dennis Heywood (21) also contributed to their team’s total in the latter part of the innings.
Replying, GYO were in a spot of bother on 132-6, still trailing by 140 runs when the umpire called off play for the day at the Malteenoes Sports Club Ground in Georgetown.

GYO’s left arm orthodox spinner Trevon France, who finished with a 10-wicket match haul last weekend, claimed 6-87 from 22 overs, and was supported by K. Singh, who was responsible for two victims.
France then returned to hit 32 not out and saw his team to the end without any further hiccups. Resuming play with him tomorrow is Leon Griffin, who is on 18. Twelve-year-old Movindra Dindyal batted impressively for 36, while Devish Ramjattan played patiently for 22.
Dwayne Dodson has so far collected two wickets for the students, who are well placed to claim first innings’ points. Meanwhile, in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) versus Transport Sports Club (TSC) clash at the military base at Camp Ayanganna, the visitors are in command after the first day’s proceedings.
TSC scored 214 all out, then limited the hosts to 74-9 before the day closed.
