Guyanese players impress in Windies U19 warm up match

Windies under-19 had a productive start to ICC Youth World Cup being held in New Zealand by defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) by seven wickets in their first of two warm up matches.
Among the stand out players were three of the five Guyanese on the squad, making valiant contributions with bat and ball.
Windies were aiming to get miles in their players’ legs and so utilised eight bowlers, but slow left-armer Jeavor Royal managed to stand out from the crowd, taking 2 for 4 from his six overs, including the wicket of PNG’s top scorer, Igo Mahuru to bundle out PNG for 105.

Fellow left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd supported with 2-10 from six overs while Bhaskar Yadram had figures of 1-9 from his five overs. Medium pacer Ronaldo Alimohamed went wicket less in his five overs but was economical.
Windies began their reply on a cautious note and at the start of the 17th over the score was 53-2. Five and a half overs later the game was done courtesy of a Yadram’s 23-ball 37 cameo that brought proceedings to a swift conclusion.
The right-hander smashed five fours and two sixes while opener Kegan Simmons (23) and captain Emanuel Stewart (21) produced more tempered innings.
The defending champions will play their final warm-up today from 17:30h (Guyana time) against Zimbabwe at Lincoln Green, Christchurch.
They will play their first match on January 13 against hosts New Zealand. The Caribbean side will then clash with South Africa four days later before their final group match against Kenya on January 20.
