Pace and Power, NA Boxing Academy ready to rumble at GBA Novice Championships

The Pace and Power Gym of Albouystown, Georgetown and the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, Berbice, are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Novice Championships, scheduled for September 25-27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
The three-day tournament is expected to bring together some of the country’s most promising amateur boxers, all eager to showcase their skills, gain valuable competitive experience and make their mark on the local boxing scene.
With the championships providing an important platform for developing talent, both gyms are determined to ensure their boxers enter the ring well-prepared and ready to make an impression.
Pace and Power, under the guidance of experienced Coach Clifton Barker, has been working tirelessly in Albouystown, with the trainer targeting a strong representation at the championships.

Barker revealed that he currently has approximately 15 boxers in his programme, including four females, and hopes to bring at least 10 competitors to the tournament.
He noted that the female boxers will be given the chance to test their skills, as he continues his efforts to contribute to the development of women’s boxing in Guyana.
A number of Barker’s boxers hail from Sophia, outside the gym’s Albouystown base. The Coach said he was pleased with the dedication shown by the youngsters, despite the challenges involved in getting them to and from training.
“I’m glad that they’re all showing the interest and the commitment. It’s difficult, you know, I have to pick them up daily, and take them back home, but they’re always eager to learn,” Barker said.
Meanwhile, the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, led by former national champion Jeff Roberts, is preparing a smaller but highly-motivated contingent.
Roberts said he is working with at least five boxers, but made it clear that his boxers will be entering the competition with ambitious targets.
The Berbice-based academy has a proud tradition of producing national and Caribbean champions under Roberts’ guidance.
The upcoming championships will provide an opportunity for the gym to introduce another group of promising boxers to the national amateur boxing circuit.
The tournament has generated considerable interest, particularly with the return of the Republican Gym, adding further competition to an already highly-anticipated championships.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle said he was pleased with the efforts being made by gyms across the country to participate in the event.
Ninvalle noted that the strong response from Coaches and boxers reflected the continued development of amateur boxing in Guyana.
He also commended the Coaches for their dedication to nurturing young talent and keeping the sport active and competitive.
