Students of Abrams Creek Primary School located at Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region Two) recently benefited from two ICT labs and a library, complements of Pomeroon Trading.
According to reports, the project was coordinated and funded by the coconut oil company.
The company is known for its dynamic social outreach projects in the community, with previous programmes which include the building of a dining room for Hackney Primary School, and the organising of training and seminars for women of Pomeroon.
Addressing the gathering, Tana Yussuff, Pomeroon Trading’s Community Development Coordinator said that the team set out last year to develop a community of readers in Pomeroon.
However, she was elated to relate that the ICT labs will inspire the next generation to develop their technology skills.
This publication understands that the project was conceived out of a private and public sector partnership. The Region Two Department of Education, the Guyana Energy Agency and the Telecommunications Ministry are the public agencies that supported the project.
The company, however, unfolded that the Guyana Energy Agency offered its support through the installation of a photovoltaic system and the Ministry of Telecommunications provided an ICT Hub.
Jared Kissoon, Pomeroon’s Chief Operating Officer for the Caribbean said that every child should be entitled to the same educational opportunities in Guyana regardless of location. A key component of this is access to books and the Internet.
“At Pomeroon Trading, we consider community service to be central to our vision and operations. We look forward to growing alongside the community in the Pomeroon”, he said.
Meanwhile, Netram Doobay, an officer from the Department of Education, Region Two, welcomed the initiative with open arms.
Teachers and students of the school were urged to read more and make full use of the computers and the internet facility since young minds need to grow and develop in this fast-changing technological world.
During the blessing ceremony, guests were entertained with songs and poems performed by the students.
The curtains later came down with Abrams Creek’s Grade Five pupil, Kassandra Edwards expressing thanks to the team for their donation.
