Abysmal batting enable outright victories in first round
When the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Jaguars league bowled off on Saturday last a high level of competition was predicted over three days, however, that was not the case.
Instead the first round of the League was plagued with abysmal batting as three teams recorded victories.
In 12 completed innings so far, 1687 runs were scored which breaks down to 141 runs per innings. Which could only be determined an unhealthy batting performance.
Only one century was scored while five batsmen accounted for half centuries. Exciting all-rounder, Ricardo Adams, who had a good outing with bat and ball for Essequibo in their win, was the lone centurion while Kemol Savoury, Robin Bacchus, Seon Hetmyer, Devon Clement and Anthony Bramble recorded half centuries.
Therefore batsmen will have to apply themselves more going forward; show mental toughness as well as the approach that is required at this level.
Meanwhile, the bowling was dominated by the usual spin bowlers, namely Anthony Adams, Gudakesh Motie Kanhai and Gajanan Suknanan, who captured more than 20 wickets among them in the first round.
But the surprise of the weekend was emerging all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford’s 12 wicket match haul from his skidding medium pace which secured a come from behind victory for East Bank against Georgetown.
Raun Johnson continued to be consistent with his quality fast bowling thus was able to standout despite Upper Corentyne’s loss to Essequibo.
In the three completed matches; Essequibo defeated reigning champions Lower Corentyne by 34 runs, Upper Demerara/ East Bank upset Georgetown by 26 runs and Upper Corentyne clinch a 2 wicket victory over West Berbice.
The encounter between East Coast and West Demerara was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Action in the League is expected to continue this weekend.
