…cop suffers broken leg, pilot escapes unhurt
A rescue team has been dispatched to Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) to search for a Cessna aircraft and its occupants – a pilot and a policeman – after it crashed about one mile from the Boeraserie Water Conservancy.
This publication understands that the Cessna 182 plane, said to be a Seventh Day Adventist Missionary aircraft, crashed at about 19:00h as it was transporting a body from Arawai to Eugene F Correia International Airport (Ogle airport).
Speaking with Guyana Times, Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Colonel Edberg Field explained that the aircraft may have crashed after it reportedly ran out of fuel.
He said that he is uncertain whether the plane landed in trees, on land or in the water but, nevertheless, stated that after the crash, the police rank on board contacted his superiors via telephone. Field stated that the policeman suffered a broken leg but the pilot escaped unharmed.
Field added that ranks from the Guyana Defence Force and officials from the GCAA were, up to late Monday evening, attempting to rescue a pilot and a police rank. Guyana Times was told that the body the two persons were transporting remained intact.
Meanwhile, residents of Canal Number Two told this publication that they were alerted that something was amiss when they saw an ambulance and van-loads of Guyana Defence Force and Police ranks speeding through the area.
A resident noted that it was then that they were told that a plane had crashed south of the Boeraserie Water Conservancy.
