Alert GDF rank foils 2 students from committing suicide

An alleged attempt by two young teenagers to end their lives was thwarted on Friday afternoon after they were intercepted by ranks of the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) Coast Guard.
According to a statement from the Army, the incident occurred sometime around 15:00h on Friday at the Kingston Jetty, Georgetown, and involved two secondary school students.
It was reported that the Coast Guard rank along with the Unit’s Welfare Officer confronted the teenagers as they were about to jump into the water.
“The two teenagers, who were allegedly preparing to jump into the deep waters at the mouth of the Demerara River, were spotted by an observant rank who immediately intervened with the assistance of the Unit’s Welfare Officer,” the military’s post on Facebook stated.
It further detailed that the Guyana Police Force was subsequently summoned to the scene and the teens were taken into custody.
When contacted, A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara) Commander Marlon Chapman told this newspaper that he was unaware of the incident. However, the Force’s Public Relations Officer Jairam Ramlakhan was able to confirm the incident but was unable to provide further any information.
