A 42-year-old cane harvester, reportedly of Corentyne, Berbice, who was released on station bail after being accused of raping a 12-year-old relative over five months ago will appear in court today.
This comes days after a warrant was issued for his arrest following a missed appearance at the Whim Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.
Police stated that the accused was apprehended on Saturday, adding that he would be arraigned for the indictable offence. The warrant, arrest and subsequent court proceedings followed media reports that Police were employing measures to have him found. According to reports gathered, the man, who was taking care of the child at the time while her mother was away, reportedly placed the juvenile in a locked room where he carried out the unlawful act.
Information reaching this publication indicated that it was the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) whose office recommended that a rape charge be filed. The cane harvester was first arrested for the incident on May 3.
