An appeal to parents everywhere

Dear Editor,
The Student Society against Human Rights Violations (SAHRV) which comes out of our highest educational institute, UG, will mark International Women’s Day with a March for Girls on March 11.
Among the issues our girl children will be marching for is the legalisation of sex work!
Now, I understand that prostitution being the world’s oldest profession and the fact that it still survives probably demand consideration and if this was a situation of women marching to legitimise what is an adult consensual business transaction, I would not be penning this letter.
However, I am mortified that UG-educated people are asking us to put our girl children on the streets to champion prostitution. Does UG really want to promote this profession as an option for our girls’ future?
In a world where other countries are working to get more girls into the sciences and Mathematics, this proposed march must be taken as a real reflection of how degraded Guyana’s leadership has become.
I am appealing to responsible parents everywhere. We want our girls to grow up to be smart, educated, and to have careers which will allow them to use their brains and their abilities to their best advantage. I trust that our aspirations and hopes for our girls do not amount to seeing “sex work” as a legitimate option.

Yours truly,
Sarojini Goberdan
