Another prison escapee recaptured

Another prisoner who escaped from the Lusignan Prison by scaling the fence on October 15, 2018, was on Thursday recaptured by residents at Free and Easy Village on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD).

Dextroy Pollard, 29, of Wales, WBD, was recaptured at about 14:00h and handed over to the Police at the Wales Police Station. Pollard of Wales, WBD, was convicted for breaking and entering and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
He is the second of the three escapees to be recaptured since the incident on October 15. Travis Evan, who was on remand for murder, was found at the Soesdyke Junction on October 19, 2018.
Evans was apprehended by members of the Joint Services at about 07:45h after they received information about his whereabouts.
The Prisons Director thanked public-spirited persons who assisted the members of the Joint Services in recapturing the murder accused while encouraging others to follow suite.
Meanwhile, Police are still on the hunt for Sudesh Dyal, 23, of Wales Backdam, WCD, also escaped from the Lusignan Prison. He was on remanded for breaking and entering and larceny to be recaptured.
The trio escaped from the Lusignan Prison at about 04:30h on October 15, 2018, by scaling the fence between towers three and four which were equipped with security personnel.
At the time, there were also five prison officers and Police ranks in close proximity to the area where the men escaped but no one reportedly saw any unusual movements or sounds.
At a subsequent press conference, the acting Director of Prisons explained that he received a telephone call informing him that there was a prison break about two hours after it occurred.
He said he immediately instructed to put into operation the Standard Operating Procedures (SoP), which is to review relevant Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage and to conduct a physical muster. It was while reviewing the footage, he came to the conclusion that the ranks on duty were not alert.
Samuels explained that the three men took a considerable amount of time to make their way through the razor wire.
The ranks on duty were subsequently questioned and placed under close arrest.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Guyana Police Force publicly commended the residents of Free and Easy Village, WBD for their brave and courageous actions.
The Police Force said the action by the residents is testimony that the Police Force is gaining the public’s trust and encourages others to assist in the apprehension of those still at large.
