Over the past week, hundreds of passengers have been seen flocking the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, with hopes of making it on to their flight out of Guyana. This is as Aruba Airlines, just weeks after commencing operations in Guyana has been accused of overbooking flights, forcing passengers to rely on a “first come, first serve” system.
Following the inaugural landing of the airliner in Guyana, local franchise holder Captain Gerald Gouveia indicated that the carrier will be serving between Guyana
Scores of passengers flock the CJIA on Friday, uncertain as to whether or not they will make the flight out of Guyana
and Cuba, flying three times a week. This is with the use of an Embraer ERJ 145, which has the capacity of carrying about 150 passengers at a time.
However, despite operating with a small aircraft, the airline is said to book an excessive number of passengers, making it impossible to transport the full list in one flight. As a result, they have been faced with a constantly growing backlog which has resulted in travellers either forcing their way onto the flights or being turned away at the airport. Earlier this year, Cuban passengers were faced with a similar debacle as the aircraft attached to the Easy Sky’s fleet was grounded, following similar reports of Honduran-based airline overbooking as well as overloading their flights.
While disgruntle travellers have pinpointed Aruba Airlines as the most recent culprits for overbooking and uncertainty in travel, there is no official confirmation as to whether or not the newly inducted domestic carrier is truly the reason passengers are being left stranded at the CJIA.
