Awareness walk highlights importance of stable families and foster care

The Human Services and Social Security Ministry’s Family Enhancement Services Section (FESS), in collaboration with the Childcare and Protection Agency’s (CPA) Foster Care Unit, hosted a Family and Foster Care Awareness Walk on Sunday aimed at promoting the importance of stable and supportive family environments for children. Themed, “Promoting Stable Families, Connect, Strengthen, Empower,” the event brought together families, foster parents, children, Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and other stakeholders in support of family well-being and child protection. The walk began at the eastern end of the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge and proceeded across the bridge before concluding at the Guyana/China Friendship Park. Participants later took part in a series of family-focused activities designed to encourage bonding and positive interaction.
In a post on social media, it was stated that the Human Services and Social Security Minister, Dr Vindhya Persaud, was among those in attendance and joined participants in raising awareness about the importance of strong family connections and the role foster families play in providing safe and supportive homes for children.
Activities included interactive games, team-building exercises and recreational sessions aimed at fostering communication, cooperation, and healthy family relationships. Organisers said the activities also helped to reinforce the importance of creating environments where children can develop emotionally, socially, and academically. The event also recognised the contribution of foster parents and caregivers who provide care and support to vulnerable children.
Organisers noted that foster families continue to play an important role in helping children access stable and nurturing home environments. According to the Ministry and the CPA, initiatives such as the awareness walk form part of ongoing efforts to promote family stability, strengthen community involvement, and encourage collective responsibility for the welfare and protection of children across Guyana.
