Bandits terrorise, rob Canje women

Two women were on Monday afternoon attacked and robbed by two masked bandits at their Cumberland, East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) home.
Reports are that about 14:00h, the two masked men who were armed with cutlasses entered the lower flat of the house.
At the time, Bibi Sankar, 59, a housewife and her 28-year-old daughter, Razia Sankar, were at home along with two children.
Based on reports received, upon gaining entry to the house, the bandits instructed the women not to raise an alarm. They proceeded to demand cash and jewellery. The two women were subsequently bound as the men ransacked the house. After the women refused to cooperate, they were severely beaten.
Upon searching the house, the men found several pieces of gold jewellery and $500,000 in cash. As they were leaving, they also collected a Samsung tablet that belonged to one of the children.
After the men left, the women managed to untie themselves and raised an alarm. The Police responded quickly and started a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The two women, who were found covered in blood, were subsequently taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital and were treated. Police, acting on information received, have arrested two persons in connection with the robbery.
