Bartica man fined $200,000 for drunk driving

A man from Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni) was fined $200,000 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. At the same time, his breath alcohol levels exceeded the legal limit. The matter was heard on Friday before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir. In the first case, 25-year-old Alexis De Camp of Byderabo Road, Bartica, appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court charged with Driving Whilst His Breath Alcohol Level Exceeded the Prescribed Limit, contrary to Section 39(A)(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by Act 17 of 2022.

De Camp entered a guilty plea when the charge was read to him. Magistrate Mohabir imposed a fine of $200,000, with a default sentence of six months’ imprisonment should the fine not be paid. This comes just a few days after a man was charged for a similar incident at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court. Totaram Narine, a 41-year-old carpenter of Huist Dieren, Essequibo Coast, was also fined $200,000 after admitting to the same offence.
