“Because We Care” cash grant distribution to begin on June 29

The distribution of the “Because We Care” cash grant, the transportation grant, and the uniform grant, all of which amount to $85,000, will commence from June 29.
Education Minister Sonia Parag on Tuesday made the announcement as she delivered remarks during the regional consultation in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) on anti-bullying and anti-violence policies for schools.
“The Ministry of Education through the Government of Guyana is ensuring that children have all the resources they need. And beginning on the 29th of June, every parent who has a child registered in the school system, private or public, will be receiving the Because We Care cash grant across the country,” Parag said.
“You’re going to be getting $85,000 per child. That’s moving the Because We Care cash grant from $50,000, where it was at, to now $60,000, plus the $5000 for uniforms, plus a new grant of $20,000 for transportation for these children.”
This year will mark the seventh consecutive year that the grant has been distributed by the Government, where over 200,000 are scheduled to benefit from the grants. This year’s total grant marks a $30,000 increase over the $55,000 that the grants amounted to last year when approximately 205,000 students from both the public and private school systems benefited from the grants.
Earlier this year the Government allocated an estimated $12.4 billion in the 2026 National Budget to the “Because We Care” cash grant programme, after increasing the grant to $60,000 per child. The $20,000 transportation grant is a new feature that was added to the benefits allocated to parents after it was a promise made by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) during the 2025 campaign trail.
A brainchild of the PPPC Government, the “Because We Care” project was initially introduced in 2014 when it issued cash grants of $10,000 per child in the public school system. The programme was implemented with the aim of providing support to parents with school-age children and increasing their disposable income, with a view to raising enrolment and attendance rates. The programme was discontinued from 2015 to 2020 during the tenure of the APNU/AFC time in office. However, when the PPP/C resumed office in 2020, the grant was returned and saw incremental increases over the years.
