Berbice farmer charged for unlicensed firearm, ammo

Sixty-year-old Charan Suresh Guman of Clifton Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), was on Monday arraigned for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Guman pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Renita Singh. The police stated the on June 18, 2019, at Port Mourant, Georgetown, Guman had one .38 revolver along with two live .38 rounds and four .38 spent shells without being the holder of a firearm license.

He was granted bail in the sum of $400,000 and was also ordered to lodge his passport and other travel documents until the determination of the matter.
It was reported that on the day in question, Police acted on information received and went to a farmhouse at Babu John, Port Mourant, and carried out a search during which an unlicensed revolver with matching ammunition were found on a table.
At the time of the discovery, Guman was present and as such, he was arrested and charged. He will make his next court appearance on August 17, 2020.
