“Best time for sports” – Jacobs discusses development initiatives

With several infrastructural and programme-based projects in the works, it’s always a busy season at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
In fact, Minister within the Sport Ministry Steven Jacobs recently divulged the massive spread of infrastructural projects his Ministry is currently overseeing as they work to provide and enhance facilities across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions.
“Added to that, we’re building out the infrastructure to develop these talents, and these infrastructures are spread across regions. So, you’ll have in Region One a multipurpose hall that will give persons in Region One an opportunity; in Region Two, the Anna Regina Stadium; and in Region Three, the Leonora Track and also a multipurpose hall. In Region Four, you have Providence, and we can go on. In Region Five, which is close to Region Six, you have Palmyra, which will open very soon; in Region Seven, Eight, and Nin, you’ll have multipurpose halls; Region 10, you’ll have McKenzie and Bayrock stadiums,” Jacobs revealed.

He added, “It’s just to give you an idea of all the infrastructure we’re putting in place, and that is for the development of our athletes.”
During his sit-down with the Starting Point Podcast on Sunday last, the Minister went into detail about several development projects, foremost of which will be the establishment of a high-performance facility.
The Minister disclosed, “One of the most transformative pieces of infrastructure that is coming on stream is a high-performance centre at Good Hope, where you’ll have open fields, but you’ll have a performance lab. Because we understand that it has moved from natural ability and raw talent to the biomechanics of whatever sport discipline you’re attached to. We want to break that down in detail, and the recovery and nutrition will accompany all these things at the high-performance centre. So, we understand how sport is and how we need to develop our talent.”
As such, the former cricketer declared that Guyanese are witnessing the best time for sports in the country’s history.
“This is the best time for sports. This is clear; it’s the best time for sport, as a former athlete. Through the leadership of His Excellency, you know how he feels about sport; he’s very enthusiastic and energetic about sports, and he wants to see the development of sport right across the country,” Jacobs declared.
The Minister went on to share, “All of these initiatives and plans and so forth, is led by His Excellency and how he wants to see sport here, not just as development for athletes but in sports tourism.”
