The Enterprise Community Centre Ground on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) will be the perfect backdrop for a monumental clash today, Tuesday, August 25, as the curtains come down on the inaugural Beharry Group Under-19 Secondary Schools’ T20 Cricket tournament.
After weeks of competition across the country, only two teams remain; Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) and Annandale Secondary.
The finalists met a few weeks prior in the tournament’s Top Eight playoffs, where BEI had the upper hand with a 35-run victory, but Annadale has since put together a string of clinical victories and will be looking for revenge.
During a face-off at the title sponsors’ Charlotte Street, Georgetown, office on Monday, the Captains shared their expectations for tomorrow’s game.
Annandale Secondary’s Joshua Bollers shared, “As any final, when you’re approaching it, there will be some nerves, but we think once we come out [and] we play fearless cricket, there shouldn’t be any factor that should stop us from winning.”
BEI’s Gilbert Griffith went on to state, “We just have to play the best game tomorrow, and we got this. Just play our best game and we’ll carry it home to Berbice.”
While expectations also came from the finalists’ coaches, those individuals also spoke to the value of the competition.
Annandale’s Coach, Parmanand Dindyal, expressed, “Thanks to the organisers, the sponsors; it is a very good thing they’ve done for this country for cricket presently. After so many years school cricket hasn’t [been] played.”
“We prepared, Berbice prepared… the best team may hop to one,” Dindyal added.
On the other hand, BEI’s Coach Naeem Khan divulged, “The Manager and I, we have been working with the players; we’ve had a few practice sessions, we’re working, and we’re ready for Annandale. I know for sure, on the day, as long as we put in the performances, we will come out on top.”
“I’d like to thank Beharry Group of Companies for sponsoring such a tournament. It may look as just a tournament, but in the long run, it’s not just that. What’s it all about? It’s about laying a platform for development for youths in Guyana. I’d like to thank them for realising this,” Khan further noted.
In a word from the sponsors, Beharry Restaurants Marketing Manager Kristy-Ann Ramsamooj reiterated their commitment to the tournament.
“Through cricket, we aim to create opportunities that will foster a positive environment for youth development by combining sport training with mentorship, character building with education and community engagement. We do hope to empower our young people and our communities at large,” Ramsamooj told the gathering.
The Beharry Restaurants Marketing Manager added, “Looking forward to tomorrow’s game.”
The Beharry U19 T20 final is set to get underway at 13:00h on Tuesday. That final will be preceded by a novelty match, pitting the sponsors against the Ministry of Education, set for 10:00h.
