A 27-year-old man of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, is currently hospitalised with a gunshot injury to his leg during a shootout with police ranks.
The incident occurred at about 21:00h on Saturday at Vryheid’s Lust, ECD.
Based on police reports, ranks in Regional Division 4 ‘C’ (ECD) received a report about a man, who was allegedly walking in the area with a firearm in his possession.

Acting on the information, the police proceeded to Vryheid’s Lust. However, upon seeing the ranks, the man allegedly pulled out a handgun and discharged several rounds in the direction of the police, after which ranks returned fire.
Police said on Sunday that the suspect then fled in a southern direction and ranks gave chase before apprehending him in a nearby yard after he scaled several fences.
A search conducted on the suspect, leading to the discovery of a black .32 CZ firearm.
The man was arrested and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station along with the firearm, where his hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue.
He was subsequently escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation to seek medical attention for a gunshot injury to his right leg. He is presently hospitalised under police guard.
