A rice farmer was beaten to death after complaining of damages to his crop by animals in his Black Bush Polder (BBP) farm, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne)
Dead is 36-year-old Chanderpaul Dhoman, called “Jack”, of Lot 28 Johanna North, Black Bush Polder. He was allegedly beaten on December 30, 2019, but succumbed to his injuries on January 1, 2020.
Reports are that on Monday, at about 20:00h, Dhoman was riding his bicycle along First Street, Johanna on his way home from his rice field when he saw three men imbibing in a yard.
He complained to two of the men about their animals grazing in his rice fields ultimately damaging his crop.
However, an argument ensued between them during which the two men collected metal objects and dealt Dhoman one blow to the head. After collapsing, the two men continued their attack on the injured man.
Dhoman was eventually picked up and taken to the Mibicuri Public Hospital in a semi-conscious condition but was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and then the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
He took his last breath on New Year’s Day whilst receiving medical attention in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the medical facility.
The dead man’s mother-in-law Bibi Yakub explained that they were at home when they received a message that Dhoman was lying on the road. They rushed to the scene where they picked him up and reported the matter to the Police before taking him to the hospital.
“When we were going, I asking who knock him and he say ‘Davo’ and ‘Corn Curls’. We carry he to the Station and tell the Police that he can’t walk, so the Police give me a medical and tell me that he gon come to the Hospital and talk to him,” she related.
His body is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
