Blair resigns as UDFA Vice President, cites leadership concerns

Akanni Blair has resigned with immediate effect as third Vice President of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA), citing concerns about the organisation’s leadership, financial accountability and tournament administration.
Blair announced his decision in a letter dated September 9, 2026, and addressed to UDFA President Wainewright Bethune. He said the resignation followed careful consideration and was prompted by what he described as ongoing leadership and administrative challenges.
“I cannot, in good conscience, continue to serve under this Association in its current construct, as its modus operandi does not align with my professional values,” Blair stated.

Blair said he joined the executive with the belief that he could help to bring about positive change. However, he claimed the leadership approach had been “stubbornly myopic and lethargic”.
The outgoing official also alleged that the executive had operated in a haphazard manner and had repeatedly failed to provide an account of the Association’s financial position and dealings.
He further criticised the UDFA’s efforts to attract sponsorship and raise funds, while questioning its handling of tournaments.
Blair pointed to the Divine Entertainment Summer Super Cup as a recent example. The competition was sanctioned by the UDFA but organised by a private group and concluded on August 29.
According to Blair, prize money had still not been distributed to the successful teams and some individual players more than a week after the tournament ended. He also claimed the UDFA executive had neither issued a statement on the matter nor intervened to have it resolved.
Despite the concerns raised, Blair expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and wished the Association well.
Copies of the resignation letter were sent to UDFA Secretary Kellon Josiah and Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde.
