For the second time this year, Blairmont Community Centre defeated Albion Community Centre in a semifinal of the Berbice Cricket Board’s junior cricket tournament.
After knocking Albion out of the New York Business Group Under-19 Tournament, Blairmont Community Centre again defeated Albion, by 56 runs, to join Rose Hall Town (RHT) Gizmos & Gadgets in the grand finals which will be played shortly.
Winning the toss, Blairmont Community Centre elected to bat first. Fawaz Gafoor top-scored with 25, and received support from Javed Karim (22), Nigel Deodat (17), and Rameshwar Samaroo (17), as Blairmont were bowled out for 165 from 45.1 overs.
National Under-19 bowler Kevin Umrao took 5 – 37, while Karran Arjpaul who
played for Guyana in 2017 took 2 – 19.
Needing to score 166 for victory from 50 overs, Albion crumbled to a disappointing 109 in 35.4 overs, despite Umrao returning with the bat to score 32.
National Under-17 off spinner Seon Glasgow was the best bowler, with 5 – 27 from ten overs.
Nigel Deodat, another Guyana Youth Player, took 2 – 13, while Javed Karim bagged 2 – 23 for the hardworking side.
Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets had earlier in the week destroyed Tucber Park Cricket Club by eight wickets to advance to the finals. Tucber Park were bowled out for 104, then RHT blasted 108 for 2 in just 8.3 overs. The final promises to be an exciting affair, despite RHT having a superior team on paper with players like Kevin Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, Junior Sinclair, Keith Simpson, Sylus Tyndall, Jonathan Rampersaud, Mahendra Gopilall and Jeremy Sandia.
Most of these players were involved in the New York Business Group Under-19 Finals when Rose Hall Town easily defeated Blairmont. However, with another chance to take on their rivals, much would depend heavily on national youth players Karim, Marvin Prashad, Deodat, Fawaz Gafoor and Glasgow. The Under-21 Tournament is being sponsored by Elizabeth Styles, a United States cosmetics company.
