Body of missing fisherman recovered in Corentyne River
Almost one week after he went missing during a fishing expedition, 21-year-old Devin Persaud’s partially-decomposed body was discovered at Orealla, Corentyne River.
The body was found by the men with whom he was last seen. After the body was recovered, the Police stated, as a result of the state of decomposition, it was hard to determine if it had marks of violence.
It was taken to the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary to await a post-mortem, which was scheduled for today.
The young fisherman, called “Richard” of Crabwood Creek, Berbice, went missing last Thursday during a fishing trip with a group of friends. The trip, which was supposed to last a few days, ended suddenly after Persaud reportedly drowned while trying to chase some fish into a seine.
At the time, he was not wearing a life jacket. On the dreadful night about 22:00h, the young man jumped into the river, and later disappeared under the murky water. His friends reportedly searched for him for several hours, but to no avail.
It was then a decision was taken to return to shore and make a report. Meanwhile, the father of the now dead young man had initially told reporters that he did not believe the story that was told to the Police and as such, he suspected that his son might have been murdered and thrown overboard.
The Police have launched an investigation into the incident; when contacted, Regional Commander, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan related that none of the men who were on the fishing expedition had been taken into custody.
