Guyana’s national road race champion Briton John will begin his bid for the Tour de Guyane title today, Saturday, August 15, in French Guiana, aiming to improve on his second-place finish in the prestigious event two years ago.
John, widely regarded as one of Guyana’s leading cyclists, missed the 2025 edition but returns as one of the main contenders following an impressive start to the 2026 season in the French territory.
The Guyanese rider, who is now mainly based in French Guiana, has already won two stage races over there, the Grand Prix de la CACL and the Grand Prix de l’Ouest. He also secured victory in the Grand Prix France Pare-Brise, underlining his strong form ahead of the nine-stage tour.
John will represent Sinnamary Cycling Club and is expected to receive valuable support from teammates Owan Nubul and Patrice Ringuet, who are also capable of challenging near the front of the race.
His ability to manage hilly stages, limit time losses in individual time trials, and remain well positioned during decisive moments could make him a serious threat throughout the competition. Consistency will be important, particularly as the riders tackle varying terrain across French Guiana.
John has previously shown that he can compete with the leading riders at the Tour de Guyane. His runner-up finish in 2024 remains one of his strongest performances, and his experience gained over subsequent seasons could help him mount another challenge for the overall title.
The 35th edition of the Tour de Guyane will run from August 15 to 23, and feature 111 cyclists representing 19 teams. The competitors will contest nine stages across French Guiana.
The event will begin with a 126.32-kilometre loop from Cayenne, passing through Matoury and Macouria before returning to the starting city.
The field includes leading local teams and international riders from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium and neighbouring Caribbean islands.
Defending champion Oscar Hutchings of Schils-Doltcini Racing Team will return in search of another title, while reigning Guiana champion Benjamin Bousquet is also expected to be among the main challengers.
