Just as your Eyewitness predicted, Valentine’s Day came and went, with the APNU-AFC Cummingsburg Pre-Nup left unreviewed. Now, your Eyewitness doesn’t mind if the AFC doesn’t mind it was screwed royally by APNU where their “fair share” of the governmental authority’s concerned. Some folks actually LIKE being screwed!! Who’s your Eyewitness to deny them getting their jollies off! Different strokes for different folks and all that.
What your Eyewitness is peeved about is the AFC’s taking their “eye pass” the Guyanese people to claim the Accord “laid the foundation for the restoration of honour, dignity, credibility and unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in executive governance in Guyana.” Which alternate universe are these AFC people living in? If it had come from Nagamootoo, who received the greatest screwing as “Prime Minister”, it might be excused. The poor fella, after all, was under anesthesia.
But Trotman and Ramjattan?? Pleeeeease!!! What honour has been restored? With all the thieving that went on at Jubilee Park; the Albuoystown bottomhouse warehouse; the Pharma contract; the cleaning of Le Repentir cemetery and other City Hall contracts …all Guyanese know they’re dealing with a pack of thieves, and that there’s no honour among thieves!! How can anyone who understands the meaning of “honour” issue such a press release??
“Dignity”?? What dignity has been left for Guyana after Trotman “re-negotiated” the oil contract? We were once famous as the country of Jonestown and being “just above” that Trumpian “Sh*thole” Haiti. Now we’ll never be confused with Ghana anymore: we’re the country that has the worst oil contract in the world – even taking into consideration Ghana’s!! Even Burnham must be spinning in his mausoleum at Seven Ponds – after he warned about contracts with multinationals!!
“Credibility”?? Who‘ll believe a country whose President talks about the “rule of law” and then introduces unilateralism in every decision where the constitution MANDATES the concurrence of the Opposition Leader? And then have the temerity to say his ‘perception” of the Constitution is just as valid as that of the Judiciary’s!! “Credibility?” When the PM from the AFC is promised to chair Cabinet meetings then the President says “OOOPs!! Can’t do!” on HIS PERCEPTION of the Constitution??
“Accountability”?? To whom? This Government has certainly not held itself accountable to the Guyanese people. Why would they hide the signing of the oil bonus from the Guyanese people for over a year, and then deny it outright when “mouth open and story jumped out”?? The contract itself was revealed only after the Government was dragged kicking and screaming by an outraged civil society activist.
On “transparency”, the less said, the better. It’s exemplified by the stygian darkness in which the AFC’s statement was crafted!
…on Police Reform
Sometimes you’ve got to wonder about whether PNC folks think all Guyana suffer from ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Or whether they count on us being so preoccupied in grubbing to survive’ we don’t remember things. Your Eyewitness was struck by President Granger’s extraordinary statement on the need to curb police “lawlessness”.
We know from his decision to launch the CoIs into the Crime wave with Lindo Creek that Granger doesn’t like to start from the beginning of things. But as a historian, he should know every occurrence rooted in history is a matter of contingency. And so it is with the “lawlessness” he bemoans in the Police.
By and large, the Police Force under the British did things according to “the book”. It was when the President’s hero, Burnham, took over, he corrupted every state institution in Guyana – including (or maybe especially) the Police Force. In case he forgot the details, all he has to do is review the Rodney CoI Report.
