Carnegie School expands, increases opportunities for ECD communities

The Carnegie School of Home Economics has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Fellowship Practical Instruction Centre and the Beterverwagting Practical Instruction Centre to expand access to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes. The agreements were signed on Monday as part of efforts to bring skills training closer to communities and increase opportunities for learners to gain practical and market-relevant competencies. Under the arrangements, the Beterverwagting Practical Instruction Centre will offer Commercial Food Preparation Level One and Garment Making Level One. The Fellowship Practical Instruction Centre will offer Commercial Food Preparation Level One. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Deputy Chief Education Officer (DCEO) of TVET Ritesh Tularam, said the initiative is aimed at widening access to skills development across communities.

He said, “As our country continues to develop, it is important that we create opportunities for people in every community to gain the skills they need to contribute meaningfully to national development and improve their own livelihoods. These partnerships ensure that access to quality training is no longer limited by geography.” The Education Ministry said the initiative is the first phase of a broader plan to extend similar partnerships and programme offerings to other Practical Instruction Centres across the country.
The Education Ministry noted that, with continued national development and growth across sectors, there is increasing demand for a skilled workforce. It said the expansion of TVET delivery is intended to equip citizens with competencies aligned to emerging opportunities. The Carnegie School of Home Economics, which has long provided practical and occupational training, said the partnerships will help broaden its reach and support workforce development at the community level.
